Kruger trip brings joy to the elderly
For some of the seniors, this is their only major outing during the year.
The highlight of the year for many local senior citizens is an outing to the Kruger National Park (KNP) organised by the Rotary Club of White River.
It first started in the 1960s and has since become an annual event which entertains about 60 elderly citizens on a trip to the wildlife reserve. The recent tour was followed by lunch at Skukuza.
The main course was a braai by Rotarians while all preparations, salads and sweets were organised by the Rotary Anns.
For some of the seniors, this is their only major outing during the year – at times they feel lonely and enjoy the chance to mingle, chat and have some company.
The club’s president, Hitesh Motiram has made all the arrangements for this project for the past five years. He said that it is primarily funded by the Jacque Jensen Trust Fund, with assistance from various companies including Mikon Chicken and Oasis Water.
“We often receive a permit from KNP for free entry and this year the lunch was held at the pleasant Skukuza staff village,” said Motiram.
The president presented a merit award certificate to Elizabeth and Johannes Venter for their continued support of the seniors’ visit to the Kruger every year.
On behalf of the group, Simon Evered thanked all the Rotarians and Anns present for their hard work in making the day a great success.
