Shoppers were left terrified after five armed robbers entered a pawn shop at Matumi Retail Centre this afternoon, July 28. Loise Chauke, acting supervisor from Vikelo Security, confirmed that during his patrols he saw a man taking out a firearm upon entering the shop.

​“I immediately informed our responding officers who were summoned to the scene,” he said.

​The suspects allegedly took cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash before leaving the shop.

​According to Chauke, when the officers arrived, one of the suspects fired a few shots and took one officer’s weapon and car keys. The suspects then escaped in a dark grey Hyundai i10. ​He added that no one was injured during the incident.

Shopper describes terror

A shopper, Anton van Niekerk, shared his terrifying experience.

“I was on my way to get a few things at Checkers when all hell broke loose. People were screaming and shouting hysterically,” Van Niekerk explained.

​Police appeals to the public

Police spokesperson, Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the incident and said that police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation.
