Festive season greetings from the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator

The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator extends its warmest Christmas wishes to the public, and gives a few guidelines on being responsible when it comes to drinking.

During the festive period, there is an increase in festivities, family gatherings, work functions and braais.

While it is a great time of the year, it can also be a time of excess, especially when it comes to alcohol consumption.

Research tells us that even when people intend to drink responsibly, it can be difficult, as getting drunk is often an accepted norm. There is often social pressure to drink, and the setting makes it easy to consume large amounts.

One of the most important ways to create a less harmful drinking culture is to change the acceptance of drunkenness and the problems that go with it.

To transform this and to help you look after yourself, your friends and family, here are some tips, recommended by health practitioners, to implement during the festive period and throughout the year:

• Children and people under 18 are discouraged from drinking alcohol.
• Women who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or are breastfeeding, are also discouraged from drinking alcohol, as this is the safest option.
• Do not drink and drive.
• Liquor outlets are encouraged to trade responsibly by not selling liquor to minors, to already intoxicated persons and to pregnant women, and to keep to the stipulated trading hours.

The MEC wishes you a peaceful and harm free festive season.
