Several RDP houses are still incomplete

Recently, the provincial government took serious action against non-complying contractors and 65 of them were fired.

BARBERTON – March 15 has come and gone and several RDP houses, which were left incomplete many years ago, have still not been attended to.

Premier David Mabuza gave an ultimatum to local contractors on February 25 to complete the structures
before March 15.That deadline has passed and several of these houses, which were visited by Barberton Times, have not received any attention.Vegetation has now started to invade the empty buildings.

Residents say these incomplete houses make them feel unsafe as they offer a haven to criminals.
During his recent visits to the area, the newly appointed MEC for human settlements, Andries Gamede, promised that they were working on the issue but that there was a huge backlog. He said when he took over the department, he had warned all contractors that he was not going to tolerate any poor workmanship.Gamede took over the reins in February. He replaced Siphosezwe Masango who was accused of failing to deliver housing and misspending the budget.

Recently, the provincial government took serious action against non-complying contractors and 65 of them were fired. They left their projects incomplete and this problem exists all over the province.

The Democratic Alliance said it could not understand how Mabuza could herald the government’s housing programme a success given the huge backlog in delivery.

“The premier must stop making empty promises and threats, he must stop deceiving the public and giving people false hope.
As the saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words” and although government currently leads the verbal debate, reality is that it is far behind in delivering upon its promise,” said Willie Venter, DA media manager in a prepared statement.
