BARBERTON – In a horrific accident that occurred on the Badplaas Road on Thursday afternoon, the young driver of a new Volkswagen Polo Vivo lost his life when he was unsuccessful in trying to avoid an oncoming truck.
According to the driver of the VR cargo truck, the Polo came at him at tremendous speed after overtaking four other vehicles. From skid marks on the road, it could clearly be seen that the truck driver had made a great effort to avoid the collision.
Although he went off onto the gravel, it was no use.
The passenger of the Polo sustained extremely serious injuries and, while he was being attended to by emergency personnel, there was some speculation of his being airlifted. However, in the end he was taken to Barberton Provincial Hospital.
This reporter spoke to numerous people at the hospital on Monday afternoon, but no one was willing confirm whether he was still alive or not.
The Barberton SAPS, however, confirmed that the passenger had died not long after the accident.
