Blankets to keep out the cold

BARBERTON – During August, Ellies Engage, an initiative of Ellies, started donating over 20 000 blankets nationally.

Just before the recent cold front reached Barberton, Ellies’ Nelspruit branch had given 400 blankets to less fortunate people in Barberton.

Matthew Harvey of Ellies said that it was heart-breaking to see how many people had to go without something most of us take for granted. “It is also heart-warming to see true appreciation and knowing you’ve made someone’s life that little bit more bearable.”

Supported by his wife Melissa, Matthew handed out most of the blankets at the bungalows of the Barberton Community Forum (BCF) two weeks ago while others were taken to homes like Thandanani.

These are people who have very few material possessions and, while some of them immediately wrapped themselves in the bright red blankets before leaving for home, the words of Jarod Kintz came to mind. He once said, “The only gift I have to give is the ability to receive. If giving is a gift, and it surely is, then my gift to you is to allow you to give to me. ”

The joy on the faces of those at the receiving end was indescribable and certainly more of a gift to the rest of us than they will ever know.
