BARBERTON – There were numerous accidents and incidents in and around our town this past week. All the drivers claimed they had lost control of their vehicles.
On Tuesday evening, a man employed by Xstrata in Lydenburg was on his way to pick up his wife at the Badplaas turn-off. He never told us how he ended up in Barberton, but according to him, he lost control when his GPS told him to turn.
This resulted in his Volkswagen Polo ending up in the veld adjacent to General Street near the Nelspruit turn-off, after it had rolled a few times. He was taken to Mediclinic Barberton.
On Saturday afternoon, the driver of a Fiat Uno and his female passenger were lucky to escape with their lives after the driver lost control on the prison-farm road and nearly ended up in the yard of an adjacent house. Both were taken to the provincial hospital.
Early on Sunday morning a teacher of Emkhomazane Primary School lost control of his Mercedes in General Street, almost directly opposite the place where the driver of the Polo had ended up, but on the other side of the road. Apparently he was on his way to the morning ceremony at Church on the Hill. His learners’ books laid strewn all over the scene. He sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the provincial hospital.
More accidents occurred over the weekend, mostly on the Badplaas Road, but none were fatal. On Sunday afternoon, a truck carrying steel also lost control in wet and misty conditions, which resulted in its overturning and its cargo blocking part of the Badplaas Road.
