Eliminating fatal injuries with a zero-harm vision
Modikwa mine celebrated the two million fatality free-shifts
BURGERSFORT – On Wednesday August 21 Modikwa Platinum Mine achieved two million fatality-free shifts.
Modikwa’s business leader, Mokgosi Nkoana, would like to thank management, organised labour, employees and contractors for their contribution to this achievement.
He said, “Modikwa employees must not miss an opportunity to share with colleagues the our value of safe work. This achievement will constantly remind us that good safety performance is part of a drive worth cementing to achieve the concept of zero harm.”
Safety is a core value of Anglo American and remains its first priority. Everyone who works in Anglo American has the right to go home
without harm and the mine’s role is to make this a consistent reality. Its zero harm vision aims to eliminate fatal injuries in the workplace.
Their approach to safety is outlined in the Safety Way, a comprehensive framework of roles and responsibilities supported by a set of safety principles and mandatory safety standards. This underpins the delivery of their safety strategy which outlines our risk-based approach to safety based
on 10 key elements that drive and support effective safety management: leadership, risk management, culture, competence, assurance, monitoring,
planning, standards, communications and learning.
Modikwa Platinum Mine is an independently managed, 50/50 joint venture between ARM Mining Consortium Limited and Rustenburg Platinum
Mines Limited. The mine is on the border of the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo in South Africa, approximately 25 kilometres west of the town of
Burgersfort. It forms part of the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex and operates under a mining right covering a total area of 140 square kilometres.
The current mine infrastructure consists of two major decline shafts, namely North Shaft and South Shaft, three adits on Onverwacht Hill, a newly sunk South two- portal access and a concentrator. The mine is a hybrid operation using conventional stoping, with trackless development and ore
clearance. The mine mines the UG2 horizon exclusively, from surface to 450 metres below the surface. The mining method at Modikwa is conventional breast stoping with strike pillars.
Modikwa’s life-of-mine plan consists of a Mineral Resource (exclusive of Ore Reserves) of 60,2 million 4E ounces and an ore reserve of 8,7 million 4E ounces.
