MAGOGENI – A 25-years-old male has been arrested for the murder of his 50-year-old mother.
The suspect has been identified as Mr Sondelani Magagula, a Swaziland foreign national and married father of one.
It is alleged he killed his mother because he felt she was responsible for providing for him financially.
According to the neighbours of the house where Ms Thembi Mamba was killed, they saw nothing suspicious when the man entered the house, but pursued him when he came running out of the house.
“I did not hear a thing but I was alarmed when I saw a young man running outside. Thinking he was a thief we gave chase and we were devastated to discover that he had killed his mother,” said Themba Mdlovu (60).
Owner of the house where Mamba worker as a cleaner, Mr Phillip Magagula, who is not related to Sondelani, returned from paying his tariffs at the tribal offices to find that doors in house had been broken down.
“I went to the tribal office to pay my for my stand when Sondelani attacked his mother. She apparently ran to my bedroom for cover but he broke the door and killed her with a sharp object, presumably an axe.
“In my whole life I have never witnessed such an incident. It is horrible that a child can kill his mother out of greed. She was the breadwinner and supported Sondelani with his child, now he has killed her and everyone is going to suffer because of his senseless act,” said Magagula.
According to Magagula, Mamba had constantly lived in fear of her son, as he had in the past attempted to kill his father.
“His mother was sometimes scared of him because he once tried to kill his father for the same reason but calmed down after he joined the church. I thought it was going to change his radical behaviour but it did not,” said Magagula.
The suspect remains in police custody at the Tonga Police Station.
