MECKLENBURG – Three sisters and two brothers appeared for bail in the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court after being charged with the murders of three elderly women, Lydia Modupi (60), Christina Modupi (71) and Sinah Modupi (81), on June 14 at around 11:30.
The Modupi women of Diphale village were killed in their homes, said Const Elias Setati, media officer of the Mecklenburg police. “The five suspects were arrested by members of sector policing unit shortly after the incident was reported to the SAPS. The firearm alleged to have been used in the crimes was also confiscated,” said Setati.
The two brothers, Daniel and Tlaishego Modipi, were refused bail and remanded in police custody. The three sisters, Meisie Mpuru, Pinky Portia and Raynnet Modipi were each granted R5 000 bail and will be appearing in court on September 2. The sisters were granted bail on the condition that they did not interfere with witnesses; report to the police station twice a week and did not return to Diphale village where the murders took place.
“The motive of the murders is not yet known as the case is still under investigation. We urge anybody with information about this case to come forward,” Setati urged.
