The Mozambican driver, who only spoke Portuguese, was smiling despite the incident that surely must have rattled him. He explained to us that he was transporting unprocessed gold sand, which we realised must be ore.

On closer inspection, it was easy to see how the incident happened. Where the horse and trailer are joined, there’s supposed to be eight nuts, but this truck had only two. The third one, which could still be seen, was totally worn out.

Van Wettens were on their way to remove the truck by the time this reporter left.
