Young musician, loads of talent

"What is August Rush?"

NELSPRUIT – Alex Moldovanos (17) has a musical genius hidden within him. He currently goes to Penryn College and is the only person who obtained a 100% mark at this year’s eisteddfod in the instrumental category with his Ibanez. He found his first guitar in their house’s attic in December 2009 and sold it for R100 as he could not read music.
He only watched the drama film, August Rush by Kirsten Sheridan after his performance at the eisteddfod. ”The film is quite amazing but I don’t want to be known as the next August Rush, I want to be known for myself.”
Music has long been considered a universal language with the power to bring people together. Alex used to participate in the classical vocal category at the eisteddfod and won the trophy competition in grade six. “I always wanted to be a singer, but as
soon as I hit puberty, my voice broke and my last performance was a year later. I wasn’t inspired to sing any longer.”
In March 2010 he saw one of his friends play ”Drifting” by Andy Mckee, slapping the guitar. That was the first song he managed to learn in only three months. “I had my second guitar lesson last week but believe it or not, I still have to improve a lot.
“Some people think I am that kind of boy who go home early on a Friday night and listen to the German composer, Beethoven. I am into heavy metal rock.”
The name of the song he played at the eisteddfod is untitled. “I wrote it myself, but I put four unfinished compositions together with different endings and it all worked
out.”

He plays first team cricket, hockey and loves rugby. After school he wants to attend the recording school in Cape Town with SAE Music and want to make a breakthrough in the South African music industry.
