Robber shoots cashier dead

A young woman was killed during a daylight robbery at a hardware store in Bushbuckridge.

BUSHBUCKRIDGE – A female cashier at a local hardware store was shot and killed by a suspected robber yesterday (Friday) afternoon. She died soon after being admitted to  hospital, according to the SAPS.

Two men, one armed, entered the store in the late afternoon, held staff at gunpoint and demanded cash. The reason for shooting the woman is not clear, said col. Leonard Hlathi, provincial spokesman for the police.

SAPS members were on the scene within minutes and gave chase after the fleeing suspects. One of the suspects, a 25-year old, was killed during an ensuing shoot out with police. The other man (23) fled but was arrested hours later.

Police recovered a fire arm and the looted cash. “We suspect that more than two people were involved with this crime,” Hlathi said.

Police are investigating a case of murder, business robbery, and possession of an unlicensed fire arm and ammunition.

The suspect will appear in the Bushbuckridge court on Monday
