Pumas teach Bolanders a rugby-lesson

The Steval Pumas taught the Regent Boland Cavaliers a rugby lesson and scored seven tries to record a notable 42-21 (halftime 20-7) victory in the Currie Cup first division match played at Mbombela Stadium last Saturday.

This team has set up two new records – in 1999 they managed to get 848 points and they have scored 948 points this season and with a bit of luck with their match against the SWD Valke in Kemptonpark, they can reach the 1 000 mark on Friday.

Another accomplishment they can be proud of is that they have also scored
eight more tries (122) than in 1999.
Coach Jimmy Stonehouse made nine changes in the line-up against Boland to give some players a rest before the semi-final clash on October 4.
The Pumas opened the scoring early through winger Danwell Demas and fly half Carl Bezuidenhout was able to convert the try. The Boland tried to up the tempo but simply could not match the physicality of the Lowvelders.
After a great passage of play which saw the Pumas shift the ball wide it was the turn of Demas again to dot down. Bezuidenthout could not find his target and missed the conversion.
The referee, Marius van der Westhuizen sent the visitor’s hooker Clemen Lewis to the sin bin for 10 minutes after interfering in the maul after being warned several times. Finally in the 24th minute the centre, Braam Gerber went over for his team’s first try of the match.
Minutes to go till the end of the first half, Rudi Mathee also visited his opponents try line to extend the Puma’s lead to 20-7 at half time.
The floodgates opened in the second half and Bezuidenthout broke through and scored in the corner. Reynier van Rooyen scored try number five.
The Boland’s Ntando Kebe finally scored try number two and Len Olivier converted. After the home team missed a few tackles, Brendon April slipped through a gap and went over for a try.
Uzair Cassiem and Wilhelm Loock scored late tries to humiliate the visitors even more. Front-row player of the match was awarded to Mathee and Van Rooyen was the back-line player of the day.
