Importance of oral health highlighted

BARBERTON – The Barberton General Hospital’s dental unit has urged locals to pay attention to their oral health.

During September, which was National Oral Health Month, the local unit held awareness initiatives where they taught residents about taking care of their teeth.

Nomvula Shongwe, dental therapist, said it was in the best interest of individuals to practice good oral hygiene. “It ensures a beautiful smile, and is good for your health,” said Shongwe.

The overall aim was to improve the oral health of residents by promoting it and to prevent, appropriately treat, monitor and evaluate oral diseases.
She said most of these are not life-threatening but affect almost every individual during his/her lifetime, resulting in discomfort and expenditure in treatment.
“Most common problems include gum bleeding, swelling and bad breath. But if it is identified early, people can get assistance before it spreads,” she added.
Oral-disease levels are reported to be increasing in major sectors of the population, especially disadvantaged communities.

Shongwe said the local hospital was offering treatment options and preventative activities. She said state-dependent people should visit the institution for basic oral-health treatment services.

“Diseases are preventable and therefore oral-health promotion and primary prevention are a top priority,” she concluded.

Bonginkosi Mamba, who works at Shoprite as a trolley security guard, said he was not aware of how important it was to take care of his teeth. “From today on, I know the importance of having a routine check-up. I will encourage family members and colleagues to do the same,” said Mamba. People interested in oral check-ups can visit the local hospital on weekdays from 07:30 to 11:00.
