HAZYVIEW- Their trip to the Lowveld was cut very short when a school choir from Pretoria were robbed at gun-point at the Aan de Vliet resort in the early hours of this morning.
Just after midnight, a teacher heard a knock on the door and opened it. Three armed robbers, in balaclavas entered the room and ordered the teacher to wake the sleeping children. They proceeded to the other rooms where another two teachers and the rest of the children were sleeping. The attackers took cash, cell-phones, laptops and ipads.
The Laerskool Hennopspark school choir, ranging from grade five to seven, was on a Christian outreach trip in the area, and had only arrived in Hazyview that afternoon. They are currently on their way back to Pretoria.
The schools’ spokesperson Me Ann Alkema said that the school children are now calm, and that the school doesn’t think that Hazyview is neccessarily more dangerous than other parts of South Africa, “This incident could have happend anywhere,” she stated.
SAPS Spokesperson Col Leonard Hlathi confirmed the incident and asked that anyone with information contact Capt Albert Manzini on 082-449-0231.
Another school group was affected by a similar incident, at the same resort in Hazyview, in 2011. Read more in the Lowvelder tomorrow.
