National News: five people dead after major cave-in

Emergency services are responding to reports of a cave-in.

While details are currently sketchy, we can report that a major accident has taken place at Braamhoek.

It is not clear exactly what has happened at the Ingula hydro-electric powerplant construction site but reports are filtering that a major cave-in occured. Plus minus 30 people are trapped or injured and at least 3 dead. The casualty figure has not been confirmed.

They have asked for all available emergency services to respond, including mountain rescue.

Again, the facts are sketchy, but a Discovery Health Medivac chopper is on scene. It is believed that some of the dead are foreign nationals. According to sources on the ground, a truck backed into scaffolding, causing it to collapse.

All Ladysmith’s available paramedics and mountain rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. Most of those trapped underground were freed. At this stage, only the six dead need to be retrieved. The K9 Unit, along with mountain rescue paramedics, are involved in the recovery.

An official media statement is expected to be released soon.
