Traffic police deal Bester Street mechanics a blow
At the time of going to print, no feedback had been received about the issued fines.
NELSPRUIT – The operations of the infamous “street mechanics” in Bester Street was dealt a hefty blow this past week when one of their members was issued with a fine and the vehicle he was working on, towed away.
Last week Lowvelder published photographs of a street mechanic performing an entire engine overhaul in the middle of this busy street in the CBD in direct contravention of the former city bylaws. The following day business owners in Bester street reported that Mbombela Traffic Department had reacted to the report and were issuing fines to the illegal mechanics in that area.
It was not clear whether the vehicle that was towed belonged to the mechanic or one of his customers. At the time of going to print now feedback had been received from either Mbombela Traffic or Mbombela Local Municipality on the nature of the fines issued or whether the vehicle was impounded.
Mbombela still has not responded to the allegations regarding its alleged failure to promulgate new bylaws for their municipality.
