Young rape suspects released

A 15-year-old schoolgirl was gang raped by four fellow 16-year-old learners on November 11.

MALALANE – A 15-year-old schoolgirl was gang raped by four fellow 16-year-old learners on November 11. According to provincial spokesman for SAPS, Col Leonard Hlathi, a group of eight girls and seven boys of a local school allegedly decided to skip school and go drinking. “Apparently the learners clubbed in money to buy alcohol and they then proceeded to an undisclosed location near the railway,” said Hlathi. He added, “It is alleged that when they were drunk, four boys separated one girl from the group and raped her. The crime was reported that same day by other members of the group and the victim.”

The boys have been arrested on charges of rape and released in the custody of their parents. According to Hlathi the provincial officer is currently busy with a report on proceedings of the case and a court date has not yet been decided. He stressed, “Learners must go to school and should not take part in activities that can ruin their lives.”
