Illegal turn-off from N4 leads to another serious accident

HECTORSPRUIT – This past weekend another accident claimed a woman’s life, and residents are increasingly voicing their concern on road safety. According to bystanders everything seemed to happen in slow motion.

A Hilux was travelling towards Komatipoort, when the driver of a Polo decided to cross the road.

The two vehicles collided, sending the Polo skidding and a woman was flung out of the car, claiming her life.

The other four passengers in the Polo were rushed to the nearest hospital with serious injuries.

The three passengers in the bakkie escaped with minor injuries, as a young boy (7), among those in the Hilux, told Corridor Gazette how he had hit his head.

Residents contacted this publication to voice their objections about the new development across the N4.

It came with more than 15 new turn-offs from the highway in a matter of two to three kilometres. Residents told Corridor Gazette of drivers not complying with basic laws, such as not indicating and turning without warning, as well as turning onto the N4 right into oncoming traffic.

According to Mr Cyril Ripinga, spokesman for the municipality, these self-made turn-offs are not only illegal but dangerous.

“It is TRAC’s responsibility to fence the road along this area. Restricting access to the N4 is its responsibility as it is a national road. In any town there are one or two that lead to the highway. Why should this be any different,” Ripinga queried.

At the time of going to print TRAC CEO, Mr Graham Esterhuysen had not commented on the issue.
