LYDENBURG – Assessing the energy efficiency of selected Mpumalanga guest houses is the research theme for Fannie Machate’s doctoral thesis.

Machate and his promoter, prof Charles Hongoro, recently visited Paardeplaats Nature Retreat on the Long Tom Pass, which is run entirely on solar energy and gas.

Machate’s aim is to design a model for energy optimisation that could be used by the hospitality trade. He is a full-time lecturer in environmental health at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria.

Prof Hongoro is a professor extraordinaire at the same department and researcher at the HSRC. They will be visiting a number of guest houses in the province.
