Suspects arrested for robbery, alleged rape and assault denied bail

Case postponed until January 8

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a robbery, alleged rape and sexual assault of members of a prayer meeting. The incident occurred on Friday, November 22 when four armed men attacked church goers in the Mganduzweni Trust in Masoyi.

The first suspect aged 33 was arrested on Monday, December 2, after which the criminal disclosed the name of one of his accomplices, aged 35. One of the suspects is presently on parole for murder and the other has a previous conviction of assault, theft and house breaking.

The suspects have already appeared before the Kabokweni Magistrates’ Court and were denied bail on two occasions. They appeared for a second time in court on Thursday, December 12 and the case was postponed until January 8.

“The concerned community worked alongside with the police,” says General Lieutenant Thulani Ntobela, provincial commissioner, “which is why we could arrest some of the suspects so quickly. I want to congratulate the residents for their support in making sure that criminals are rooted out of the community. There are still two outstanding suspects on this case and the police will continue with their efforts to bring them to book.”

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects is requested to contact Constable Linco Motubatse at 072-238-1974
