Suspect busted with crystal meth worth R1,6 million

Hi-Tech said they pulled the car over after receiving information that it may be smuggling drugs into South Africa from Mozambique.

NELSPRUIT – A Mozambican man was arrested here yesterday afternoon after police found crystal meth (methamphetamine) with an estimated street value of R1,6 million in his car.

Mr Jacques Meiring from Bossies Community Justice said the Toyota with Mozambican number plates was pulled over on the N4 at the Matsulu turnoff on its way from Mozambique by officers from Hi-Tech Security Nelspruit. They had received a tip off about the suspicious vehicle suspected of smuggling drugs into the country.

Mr Nico Grobler from Hi-Tech said the driver seemed nervous. Hi-Tech’s officers waiting with the suspect on the scene, and the police’s flying squad arrived. They questioned the suspect and he allegedly admitted to having a small amount of drugs on his person for his own use.

“It was well hidden under the steering wheel in a matchbox,” Grobler said. “It confirmed our suspicions and we decided to search the vehicle thoroughly.”

The police’s dog unit joined the security firm with a sniffer dog. The drugs was reportedly discovered hidden under the windscreen wipers’ mechanism under the hood.

Eyewitnesses said it was made up in two packets and totaled about 2,4kg. The suspect was arrested. He cannot be named until he had appeared in court.
