Human trafficking trial continues in court

Girl testifies accused never used contraception when he raped her over a four year period.

GRASKOP – The young girl told the court that the accused never used contraception when he raped them over a period of four years.

This played out in the regional court last week when high profile businessman Mr Lloyd Mabuza (60) and his accomplice Ms Violet Chauke (20) appeared on charges of human trafficking of five girls from Mozambique for sexual purposes.

The trial began on Monday and ended on Thursday. The trial was postponed until March 11.
Both accused had previously pleaded not guilty to all charges. The rest of the trial is being held in camera as the five minor girls are testifying.

Officials of the Mozambique government and the NPA were in court to witness the proceedings.
She was one of five who had apparently been brought to South Africa under the false pretences of attending school and leading a better life.

The five girls, aged 10 to 16, were kept captive for four years until one of them escaped and got help last year.

Lowvelder spoke to Freedom Network, Ms Catherine Restiau who has been in the country for two years working with sex workers in the area and previously had worked with trafficked women from Russia and Rumania in Antwerp.

“The trafficking situation here is a lot different to Europe as most there are run by pimps. Here it seems more a poverty problem and the girls work here due to circumstances at home.”
