Mbombela employees strike in White River affects water supply

Mbombela White River council employees organised a strike yesterday on April 24.

Mbombela White River council employees organised a strike yesterday on April 24.

The tap-water supply has been turned off by the strikers. According to sources taps are also being manned by them preventing anyone from turning the water back on. The protest started due to a dispute about unpaid overtime.

“The community of White River are frustrated,” says Piet Skead, rate payers association. “This dispute has nothing to do with them, yet they are the ones who suffer. I have spoken to the mayor, Cathy Dhlamini about the situation. She is currently negotiating with the protestors to see if the situation can be resolved.”

Skead further stated that the guest houses in town were full to capacity due to the Foret2Falls cycle race. “This strike will also have a negative impact on our tourism.”

Should residents see anyone interfering with the water infrastructure they should immediately report it to Louis Mndawe on 082-350-6020 White River centre manager, Jabulani Mabuza on 082-715- 4696 or Monty Pienaar on 082-829-1997.
