Rape charges dropped

Nyambi urged and warned women to be more vigilant when going out.

TONGA – On the morning of May 19 two rape victims dropped rape and theft charges against a suspect who had been arrested and due to appear in the Tonga Magistrate’s Court that morning.

The suspect’s arrest by police came hours after two siblings, aged 19 and 22, reported and opened a rape case on Saturday morning.

According to the spokesman for the Tonga Police Station, Lt Mzwandile Nyambi, it was alleged that two males robbed and raped the victims while they were in the ladies’ toilet of Mabuza Bar Lounge.

Nyambi urged and warned women to be more vigilant when going out.

He said, “Girls, young women and women must take extra safety precautionary measures when they going to parties, taverns and other places at night.

This stern warning follows after two sisters were robbed off their cellphones, cash and raped by two unknown males at knifepoint on Saturday at about 02:00 at a bar in Tonga.

The two siblings, aged 19 and 22, were in the toilets when the two suspects entered the toilet and pointed knives at them and . They then forced the young women to undress and raped them.”

Police have since released and dropped the charges against only one suspect.
