Fire in the streets: Tekwane shows its anger yet again

Protests in Tekwane erupted again this Friday with residents demanding a school that is closer than five kilometers.

TEKWANE NORTH – The Karino/Plaston Road was once again blocked off with burning tyres by protesting community members.

This came just a week after their previous protest because of the sexual assault of two schoolgirls on their way home from school.

According to community members there was supposed to be a meeting between them and the Department of Education yesterday in the town hall. They warned officials that they would protest should the meeting not take place, but no officials attended the meeting.

Vehicles were prevented from travelling further than the entrance of Tekwane North, with community members dancing and singing among the black smoke of burning tyres.

SAPS officers were standing by in case the protest turned violent but waited until the community tried to block all the lanes before breaking up the protest.

Protesters fled back into the settlement as gas and smoke canisters were fired, leaving the officers standing alone in the road.

Mr Mfana Lushaba, the Ehlanzeni district manager of the Department of Education, said on the scene that they have committed themselves to building the community a school. The process, however, will be a lengthy one as they need to do a geological survey of the area, draw up plans and go through a tender process before a brick can be laid.
