MBOMBELA – According to Mr Vernon Lancaster of Hi-Tech Security Nelspruit, a community member saw a Mozambican taxi that had broken down near the Crossing Centre. The person contacted Hi-Tech’s control room and said there was something suspicious about the taxi’s trailer.
An armed response team was sent to investigate and requested the taxi driver to offload the items on the trailer. They found a motorcycle hidden beneath the load and sent the motorcycle’s engine number to be traced. Lancaster says it was a struggle at first but eventually the police found that it had been stolen from a company in Nigel, near Johannesburg, during an armed robbery.
The taxi driver was arrested and SAPS took over the investigation.
Lancaster says the control-room operator that handled the call did well to find out about the robbery in Nigel. Two other vehicles were apparently also stolen during the same robbery.
Motorcycle robberies have been occurring frequently in the area in the past few weeks and Lancaster urges owners to lock up their bikes. Robbers have been known to lift motorcycles and scooters over palisades or just roll the cycles out of properties. If possible, make sure your motorcycle or scooter is locked in a garage or keep it inside your house where there is a security alarm.
