Van den Berg murder suspects appear in court

On Wednesday, 11 June four suspects accused of the murder of Mr Riaan van den Berg appeared in court for their formal bail application.

MALALANE – On Wednesday, 11 June, four suspects accused of the murder of Mr Riaan van den Berg appeared in court for their formal bail application.

The suspects were advised by their state-provided attorney to provisionally abandon their bail application. They took his advice and this resulted in the postponement of the case for further investigation to July 30. The four men, aged from 25 to 34, allegedly beat Van den Berg to death in his house on his farm on May 29. His body, with arms and legs tied together, was discovered by a friend on Friday morning, May 30.

Family and friends were shocked by the murder, and gathered at the Periodical Court for the suspects’ first appearance on June 4. They also requested the support by the whole of the community by being present at the Malalane court on July 30.

“We are sticking together as a family. Riaan was a special man, we miss him dearly. We pray that justice will prevail,” said the brother of the deceased, Mr Johan van den Berg.
