HAZYVIEW – Residents were very alarmed when shots sounded in the area on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
Police revealed that the disturbance at about 14:00 was due to the escape of six prisoners who were held at the Hazyview Police Station. Two police officials were serving food through a security grill door to prisoners awaiting trial when they were overpowered. The prisoners stole the keys of the cell and let themselves out, handcuffing two officers and tying them up with a rope made from the cells’ blankets. The officers were robbed of their cellphones before the prisoners stole a firearm from the safe and fled.
After an extensive search of the farms around Umvubu, De Rust and Hazyview, it was presumed that the men fled into the town to evade being captured. The police helicopter and K9 unit were also summoned to help in the search.
The fugitives are Monde Mokoena (36), arrested for car-jacking, multiple counts of rape and house robbery; Adolf Nkuna (36), arrested for four counts of rape and unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm; Wonder Sibuyi (23), arrested for two counts of rape, two house robberies and murder; Bongani Nkosi (22) for rape, Gerald Morodi (25) for muder and Peace Khoza (23) for rape and assault.
The police request that anyone with information which could lead to the fugitives’ arrest, contact Capt Dudu Shabangu on 072-937-3542 or WO Dumisani Mnisi on 082-449-0231.
