Appeal to community to revamp police station

When the Emjindini satellite police station was damaged during the violent strike of 2012, the community was left in a dilemma.

However, as a phoenix rises from the ashes, a group of committed individuals have put plans in place to revamp the station. According to Cllr Mongezi Nkosi of Ward 7, individual businesses, corporate donors and volunteers have been invited to assist them in this regard.

Nkosi said they were not sure about the cost of revamping the station, but they had already received some donations.

“We are calling on anyone who can assist in our plight to revive the police station. It was so helpful to the community.”

Nkosi stated that these plans were part of their contribution to Mandela Day. “There is an increase of crime in our township and the police station can assist in establishing community policing forums. Documents can also be certified here instead of spending money to travel to Barberton, and in future, the station can keep fire extinguishers so there is help close by in case a fire breaks out,” he said.

He said a group of Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust students, were currently enrolled in a construction course, and had already offered to help, which could form part of their practicals.

They were hoping to carry out the work on July 19, also known as Mandela Day. The objective of the day was to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so, they would form a global movement. Ultimately it seeks to empower communities everywhere.
