Two rearrested after escape

The escapees were awaiting trial in the local holding cells.

HAZYVIEW – Two of the suspects who escaped from the town’s police holding cells on Sunday have been rearrested. According to Brig Selvy Mohlala, spokesman for Mpumalanga SAPS, Gerald Morodi (25) and Peace Khoza (23) were apprehended in Mhala on Tuesday.

The escapees were awaiting trial in the local holding cells. On Sunday afternoon they managed to overpower two police officers. They then took the cell keys and let themselves out before handcuffing the officers. They fled with cellphones and a firearm.

An extensive search of the area, with the help of the police helicopter and K9-unit, was conducted but proved fruitless. Suspects still at large are Monde Mokoena (36), Adolf Nkuna (36), Wonder Sibuyi (23) and Bongani Nkosi (22). The police are still searching for these suspects and Mohlala says they hope to rearrest them soon.

Anyone with information that could lead to their capture are requested to contact Capt Dudu Shabangu on 072-937-3542 or WO Dumisani Mnisi on 082-449-0231.
