GAMABELANE – In an effort to curb crime in their policing area, the Leboeng police organised a crime awareness campaign in the village recently.

The campaign was attended by stakeholders comprising local councillors, representatives of the tribal authority and members of the community.

Addressing the media, station commander of the Leboeng SAPS, Capt Solomon Maholane, highlighted that crime in the area was escalating and his station needed the help of the public in combating it.

“According to our statistics, there has been an increase in crime in our area. These criminal activities normally happen towards the end of the month. During this time the taverns are crowded and lots of our people tend to abuse alcohol and engage in the use of drugs.

After boozing most revelers resort to fights and others rape using alcohol as the scapegoat,” he said.

Maholane added that cable theft was the major crime in their policing area, and it was a concern to management of their station. According to the Leboeng SAPS, numerous cases of cable theft were reported at Mabelane village.

The station commander encouraged the community to work hand in hand with the SAPS to eradicate these crimes.

He further urged the community to report any criminal activities to the police immediately. He advised residents to switch outside lights on during the night and warned people to be vigilant if they see their lights go off without their knowledge.

He also pleaded with the community to work with the police in reporting criminal activities.

“Alone we cannot fight this scourge but with the help of the community we can win the war against crime. Let’s form street committees and forums to ensure crime is at its minimum,” Maholane concluded. The public vowed to work with the police and promised to form committees to help reduce crime. They also elected Prince Thobejane as the chairman of community policing forum (CPF) in the area.
