Laerskool Burgersfort learners perfect their cricket skills

BURGERSFORT – The local laerskool hosted a preseason mini-cricket interschool just before the actual tournament that will take place on August 16.The young ones showcased their talent at the school’s sports ground on August 2. The participants were the grade R, one, two and three learners. Parents and teachers took turns helping the pupils to improve their batting, bowling and fielding techniques.

Ms Esther Pool, HoD of the foundation phase said some of the pupils never had a chance to bat or bowl while others never even played cricket. “This is a preseason game which gives them the first opportunity to play this year, and we use it to select batters and bowlers.” She added that the event was a part of team building and marketing the school.

The organiser Ms Elize Lotter said that they used that match to select the best cricketers to play on August 16. “The tournament will feature Steelpoort, Atokia, Ohrigstad and Laerskool Burgersfort schools. This is for the pupils to have fun, and to learn bowling skills and discipline.” The event is sponsored by Spur.

Mini-cricket is considered the first phase of the sport that aspirant young boys and girls are introduced to. This softball level gives children the enjoyment that comes with participating in a team sport and also gets them acquainted with the basics.

These games are shorter than the regular ones, taking into account the ability and attention span of the younger players.
