An ordinary to work turned to tragedy when a Buscor commuter was run over and killed yesterday at the Mbombela terminus.
According to witnesses, she failed to notice an oncoming bus after disembarking and was hit by the vehicle while walking through a parking area at 05:45. Three other passengers were walking with her, but managed to avoid being hit.
The passenger that died apparently lost her footing and fell, landing in the vehicle’s path.
The executive chairperson of Buscor, Ms. Nora Fakude, expressed her shock and sorrow after learning of the untimely death of the passenger.
Mr Corrie Stapelberg, who is Buscor’s accident and claims officer immediately rushed to the scene and summoned emergency services. A MRI-scan was performed but nothing could be done and the paramedics declared her dead on scene. The police were also notified of the accident and took statements from the driver and witnesses. Buscor will also conduct its own internal investigation on the accident.
“There are no words to describe the shock and remorse with which I received the sad and unfortunate report of this tragic loss of life. Our entire staff, and we as executives of Buscor wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Buscor will do its utmost to help the family during the course of these trying times,” said Fakude.
Her next of kin were immediately informed about the tragic accident. Further announcement will be made as soon as the family and Buscor finalise the funeral arrangements.
