Defaulters on payments are in for a rude surprise

LYDENBURG – Various residents in town are still not paying their rates and taxes.
According to DA Cllr Nicko Janse van Vuuren those defaulters are in for a rude awakening as TCM is actively searching out the culprits.
“I receive a lot of phone calls from residents complaining that their electricity accounts show they are in arrears by thousands of rands. Upon further investigation I have come to realise that many residents do not take the time to find out whether their accounts are paid up. Some go so far as to think that since TCM is in such a bad state, they don’t have to pay their accounts.”
He said what residents do not realise, is that their non-payment could catch up with them soon. The municipality is updating its systems and focusing on accounts in arrears.
“This is a warning to all residents to make sure their accounts are paid up and that they do not get a rude surprise when their services are cut. I wish to add that it is a good thing that TCM is trying to sort out its arrear accounts because it is part of the cash-flow problem. I support any initiative to solve the municipalities’ money woes. So be warned, get your accounts up to date. It cuts both ways.”
Van Vuuren added that part of the data cleansing at TCM involved employees of Miyodi calling on households to get the account billing system updated. “Residents should, however, make sure that the persons doing these rounds have proper identification.”
