Trial postponed in alleged ward councillor attackers case

Alleged attackers have been charged with committing public violence.

MBOMBELA – The trial of the eleven people accused of attacking a Mpumalanga ANC ward councillor has been postponed to October 15 2014.

It is alleged that Ms Celiwe Nkambule, Mr Promise Mashaba, Ms Marcia Ndlala, Mr Saina Milazi, Mr Oscar Mndawe, Mr Vincent Mdluli, Mr Khulisiwe Mashaba, Mr David Ntsanda, Mr Ntomfuthi Khoza, Ms Phindile Sekatane, and Mr Innocent Nkosi attacked Elizabeth Maziya and ransacked her house on January 19 2012. Maziya is the ward councillor for Zwelisha Ward B, Mbombela.

The accused were arrested in September 2013 – months after the incident allegedly took place. They were charged with committing public violence.

Mr Promise Mashaba, one of the accused, said the accused have been making a stand against corruption and that their arrest was a ploy by Mayiza to silence them.

The matter has now been postponed to October 15.
