MALALANE – The man who had allegedly beaten a goat to death while being recorded appeared before the local Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of animal cruelty.
Mr Sipho Makamu (26) was arrested at his home in Mzinti the previous day after an investigation by Tonga police officials and South African Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (SAARAC).
Lowvelder was the first to publish the video which was it obtained from Ms Kobie Oberholster. It had more than 10 000 views on Lowvelder‘s Facebook page, but was removed by the social media platform itself because of its shocking nature.
Makamu was released on warning and the case was postponed to November 10, pending further investigation.
“The police management is pleased with the arrest of Makamu and believe that other community members will learn from the consequences of this senseless conduct. As police, we strongly condemn cruelty to animals and we urge that whenever members of the community witness this kind of cruelty, they must report it to the police, SAARAC or Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA),” provincial police spokesman Col Leonard Hlathi said.
