Mother pleads for help from department

Special schools are there to support learners with special needs.

LYDENBURG – Special schools are there to support learners with special needs.

However, the mother of a 16-year-old grade six boy, Conride Ngwane, wants intervention to improve the life of her son.

Joyce Mashego of Mashishing says her son has been attending Lesodi Primary School for the past few years.

However, due to the fact that he is mentally challenged, he fails to progress in school.

“He will be turning 17 this year and will still be in primary school,” said Mashego. Lesodi Primary School does not cater for learners with special needs.

“I took him to Estralita Special School but they said he did not qualify,” she said.

In August the family took pictures of him as part of their reapplication to the school.

“After I went there they said we must wait and see if he would finally be admitted,” she explained.

After a week of seeking assistance from the education department, the spokesman, Mr Jasper Zwane, said the department would have to assess the learner before they allocated a school to him.

Zwane said, Ngwane would not be accepted into Estralita School because of his age. “The school accommodates younger learners,” he added.

Mashego said she would not give up on her son, until he found a school that would cater for his needs.
