Vandals steal pink ribbons

Unfortunately, no other businesses accepted the challenge and there were people who couldn’t resist the temptation of stealing the material from the two trees closest to the church.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the women of the Baptist Church decided to show their solidarity with the fight a by wrapping tree trunks in pink material as was done in many other towns around the country.

Approximately a fortnight ago, Barberton Times reported on how they challenged other business to do the same and were present during the initial wrapping of tree trunks in the immediate vicinity of Bland Street.

Unfortunately, no other businesses accepted the challenge and there were people who couldn’t resist the temptation of stealing the material from the two trees closest to the church. The ribbons on the other trees were also removed by vandals after less than a week.

Luckily the ladies were not discouraged and they continued to wrap the trees that border the church grounds in General Street as well.

Barbertonians can enjoy this cheerful sight until Monday when it will be removed.

The wrapping of tree trunks in pink was started in 2012 by Carol-Ann van Jaarsveld, Dr Pam Ker and a breast cancer survivor, Adri van Nieuwenhuizen and named Pink Trees for Pauline.
