Local DJ determined, despite setbacks

Despite having failed in his first attempt to win an award at the South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma), local radio presenter, Daniel Nkosi of Barberton Community Radio (BCR) said he would try again next year.

DJ Sdumza, as he is affectionately known by his listeners, said not having won the title would not deter his commitment to his career but would make him work harder to shake off this setback and move forward.

“Not everyone who is on top today got there with success upon success. More often than not, those who history best remembers were faced with numerous obstacles that forced them to work harder and show more determination than others. For me this failure is just the first step towards success,” said DJ Sdumza.

The ninth Satma awards were held at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape recently.

Unfortunately, DJ Sdumza did not make it to the top. The category he was competing in – best community radio DJ – was ultimately won by Nonhlanhla Ndonso of Zululand FM.

Twenty DJs from community radio stations from across the country competed in this category. However, DJ Sdumza will find consolation in the fact that he was the only DJ from all the nine community radio stations in Mpumalanga, that was chosen.

“The competition was an eye-opener for me. Comment I got from some judges at the event was that I did exceptionally well as I was voted among the top five. For that reason, I want to thank all BCR listeners for their overwhelming support. I will definitely enter the competition again next year and hopefully bring the trophy to our province,” said DJ Sdumza who joined BCR in 2007.

His show, Sina Africa which plays South African traditional music, is broadcast every Saturday from 13:30 to 15:00.
