MBOMBELA – The provincial leadership of the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) got its desired meeting with national Hawks head, Lt Gen Anwa Dramat on Wednesday, after staging a sit-in over members’ grievances.
The provincial leadership embarked on the sit-in at the head offices of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) on Tuesday at 09:00. Among their many issues, was a lack of disciplinary action against provincial head of the organisation, Maj Gen Simon Mapyane who was on trial for fraud. Mapyane was arrested last May on charges of fraud related to travel claims.
Ever since, Popcru provincial chairman Mr Life Mononi claimed no disciplinary steps had been taken against him while he was subject to the disciplinary code. “They have not moved an inch. The silence is disturbing.”
Mononi told Lowvelder the union had sent two letters to national police commissioner Gen Riah Phiyega and Dramat and they would not move until they received the requested meeting with the top brass.
He would not show this newspaper the letter as it contained all the members’ grievances and Mononi wanted these resolved internally. “We want labour peace,” he said. “We will do everything we can to ensure that the system does not fail our members.”
The Popcru leadership travelled to Middelburg on Wednesday to meet with Dramat. Mononi said Phiyega was aware of the meetings.
