No action from Thaba Chweu on bloody situation

TCM said that they were not aware of the situation. “We were unfortunately not aware of this unfortunate and health hazardous situation. The institution will look at this matter and act accordingly. We urge community members to report incidents such as this to the municipality so we can attend to it.”

LYDENBURG – On Friday a stream of blood flowed out of a manhole in Viljoen Street and nearly ended up in the Dorps River.

Mr Neels Bothma, local reptile expert, informed the newspaper of the health risk. Blood bubbled out at the manhole at exactly the same place where contractors were busy laying telephone cables. The blood apparently came from the abattoir. The owners of S & N abattoir immediately went to the assess the situation as soon as they were notified.

In the meantime, Mr Deon Broekman phoned the municipality about the blockage. TCM confirmed they would send someone to look at the obstruction.

The newspaper sent through inquiries to TCM regarding the situation and attached pictures taken at the site.

TCM said that they were not aware of the situation. “We were unfortunately not aware of this unfortunate and health hazardous situation. The institution will look at this matter and act accordingly. We urge community members to report incidents such as this to the municipality so we can attend to it.”

TCM’s emergency number is 013-234-1788 or the technical department can be contacted on 013-235-7389. Thaba Chweu Local Municipality can also be approached directly.

Mr Leon de Jager of AfriForum Lydenburg said although several people phoned TCM to report the blocked drain, they did not respond. The abbatoir had to arrange with a private plumber to fix the blockage. “They themselves had to pay for this service. This is just another typical example where TCM failed the community by not responding and delivering a service we are paying for.”
