Speed hump improves road safety at Numbi Primary

Drawwers Road in front of Numbi Primary now has a brand-new speed hump, following the school’s concern for its pupils’ safety.

The school recently asked local DA councillor Ken Robertson to take measures to slow down traffic as speeding motorists were a danger to the learners. A speed hump was installed near the stop street to help ensure schoolchildren and nearby residents’ safety.

Robertson stated that it is imperative that children were educated and kept safe. He said the DA in Hazyview would embark on a tour to other schools in the region to ensure that similar safety measures were taken.

Some interesting facts on how your speed can affect your reaction time

• Driving at 50km/h – by the time you react to an unexpected event and apply the brakes, it takes 41m to stop.

• You will travel nearly 20m while reacting and moving your foot to the brake pedal. If a child was 20m from the car, you would still be travelling close to 50km/h when you hit the child.

• A healthy adult struck at 50km/h has about a 40 per cent chance of being killed

• In an urban environment, a child struck by a vehicle travelling at 60km/hour only has a 15 per cent chance of survival. When the impact speed is reduced to 50km/hour, the chance of survival increases to 55 per cent.
