The recent implementation of load shedding was due to the loss of 1 800 MW at the Majuba power station after the central coal storage silo cracked on Saturday afternoon. This impacted coal supplies to all six units at the power station and resulted in reduced capacity.
Residents were warned that Eskom would be under severe pressure until mid-January and urged to limit their electricity usage. Warnings would be issued via various media platforms like television, radio and social media. Eskom customers can contact the customer call centre on 0860-037-566 for enquiries or visit www.eskom.co.za to find out what the power system’s status is or in which areas load shedding are being implemented.
Residents are urged to switch off pool pumps, air-conditioning, geysers and unnecessary lights to reduce their electricity usage and the impact of load shedding.
According to the power giant’s website, if load shedding needs to be implemented Hazyview’s electricity will be switched off on Mondays from 16:00 to 18:30, Wednesdays from 06:00 to 08:30 and Fridays between 12:00 and 14:30.
