Miners compete in the Soweto marathon

Modikwa platinum mine congratulated their athletes who participated in this past weekend’s iconic Nike Soweto Marathon.
This race has a new sponsor in Nike and was once again well supported by the running fraternity.
The marathon was won by Sintayehu Legese Yineso of the Nedbank team. The Modikwa Marathon club had eight runners who competed in this race. Willem Montgomery, engineering planner South Shaft, said the experience will help their athletes when they participate in next year’s Comrades Marathon.

The mine also extended a special word of congratulations to Relognation Maphanga who ran her first 42,2km marathon and completed the distance in a time of 07:34:58.
Maphanga told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that the race was tough but she managed to soldier on to the finish.
“I was tired but I enjoyed it, especially when I went past the house where former president Nelson Mandela stayed in Vilakazi Street and other well-known landmarks on the route,” she said.
Maphanga’s teammates pushed her in the last few kilometres just to reach the finish line and she was welcomed by loud applause when she crossed.
Phillemon Maleka run his first marathon. He previously served as the team driver but has now taken up the sport. Other runners ofModikwa included Jeffrey Nkuna, Sonia Makoua, Herman Mogale, Justice Phokane Lawrence Raphiri, Peter Molapo and Adolph Boshego.
