Shop owner forced to open safe at gunpoint

Robbers make off with R 4000.

A shop owner was threatened, held at gunpoint and robbed of R4 000 by two men at his shop on Monday morning.

One of the suspects waited for the owner in front of his shop in Hardekool Street when he arrived for work.

He overpowered the owner, held a gun against his chest and forced him to open the cash register.

According to Mr Jacques Meiring of Bossies Community Justice (BCJ), which arrived on the scene approximately 30 minutes after the incident, when the suspects saw there was only about R20 in the register, they threatened the owner and forced him to open the safe in the back of the shop.

“After they emptied out the safe, they locked the owner in the bathroom and fled,” said Meiring.

He was left there for approximately half an hour before a client heard his call for help from the bathroom window.

The client reported the incident to BCJ and the SAPS. A neighbouring shop owner then broke open the bathroom door with a screwdriver.

The SAPS have no leads on the suspects as yet.
