Six cars pile up on Madiba Drive

Alleged negligent driving coupled with wet weather caused an unusual collision on Monday.

Wet roads due to Monday’s rain allegedly resulted in a six-car pile-up on Madiba Drive. Yet in this incident it was caused by a vehicle at the back and not by those driving in front. Eyewitnesses say speeding attributed to the collision.

A towtruck driver who was on the scene told Nelspruit Post that the accident apparently occurred when a speeding driver lost control on the wet road. It smashed into the car in front, resulting in a chain collision involving four other vehicles, as they were nearing a traffic light near Tiger Wheel & Tyre.

This is not the first time negligent driving on slippery roads have caused havoc. At the beginning of the rain season in October, medical personnel experienced a particularly busy weekend when several drivers lost control of their vehicles on the city’s wet roads. At the time the accidents were also largely attributed to a light drizzle. This is often considered to be more dangerous than heavy rain since it made the road surface more slippery.

Motorists are advised to be extremely cautious when roads are wet, and to regularly have the conditions of their tyres, brakes and shock absorbers checked.
