MBOMBELA – The regional leadership of the ANC yesterday expressed their support for Mr David Mabuza.
Mabuza (the premier and ANC provincial chairman) has been implicated in allegations that he was a spy for the apartheid government. A report containing these claims was sent to the party’s national leadership by former premier and former ANC treasurer Mr Mathews Phosa.
The regional leaders eventually called a press conference to express their support for the chairman they had elected to the media, explained Gert Sibande chairman Mr Vusi Shongwe.
His colleague in the provincial legislature and chairman of the ANC in Bohlabela Region, Mr Gillion Mashego presented the statement claiming the accusations are an “old palace manoeuvre”.
They reiterated Mabuza’s position that the report was written and distributed by Phosa.
“As the ANC we had great respect for this comrade, but with this development we are taking a dim view at even calling him a comrade as he behaves like an enemy of our struggle,” Mashego said.
Phosa has said that he distributed the report to ANC bigwigs for investigation and not to the press.
The 22-person delegation including the province’s ANCWL and ANCYL added that the SACP and its provincial secretary were likely part of “this broader attempts to disrupt the unity of the province”.
The youth league is expected to express their disapproval of Phosa and the SACP later today.
