Traffic on the R40 disrupted due to protest actions

Motorists had to find another way to get to Hazyview and Bushbuckridge this morning when protesting community members blocked the R40 at two different spots.

According to security sources in the area, community members of Marite blocked the R40 between Bushbuckridge and Hazyview early this morning. Mr Elvis Ngomane, liaison officer for the HCBT, reported that another roadblock was added by the Marongwana community a bit later.

Motorists were encouraged to avoid the R40 and take the R533 and R535 until the situation had been resolved.

At 07:00 police were on the scene to talk to the protesters. According to Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Sgt. Gerald Sedibe, the protest actions lasted for about an hour early this morning. Tree branches and other objects were used to block the road but have been removed since. Sedibe stated that it was a service delivery protest, with residents demanding access to water.

There were no damages and no arrests were made.
